Many people dread going to the dentist, because they are almost positive their dentist will tell them they have a cavity. Don’t let this be you! Follow these 5 tips to help prevent cavities for 2018.
Brush: Brush your teeth two times a day for 2 minutes each session. Make sure to use a very soft bristled brush! Though it may seem like stiff-bristled brushes would give a better clean, the exact opposite is actually true. Medium and hard bristles can damage tooth enamel and rip up gum tissues. Stick with soft bristles for a polished clean!
Floss: Cleaning between your teeth is just as important as cleaning the surfaces of your teeth. Interdental cleaning removes food, bacteria, and debris from places your brush can’t reach.
Chew Gum: Chewing gum for 20 minutes after eating helps to stimulate saliva flow, which is your body’s first defense against cavities. Saliva distributes fortifying substances to enamel and washes away food and debris from your teeth.
Eat Well: Avoid sugary and acidic foods. The former feeds the bacteria in your mouth that produce acid which deteriorates enamel, and the latter deteriorates enamel directly. Be especially aware of less obvious culprits, such as energy or sports drinks.
Visit Your Dentist: Visiting your dentist allows them to catch any problems early, before they become major problems.
